“It’s an incredible experience to be in her presence and sense her soul, energy, and instruction.” Chopra, Deepak. Maya Fiennes, a musician and yoga instructor, combines her abilities to produce a wonderfully beautiful Kundalini practice focused on building the body’s stress defenses. Maya awakens the soul, energizes the body, and relaxes the mind via movement, breath, mantra, and chants set to her own thrilling music. These movements are intended to purify and strengthen the kidneys and adrenals, the body’s first line of defense against stress-related disease. Kundalini yoga is one of the simplest forms to learn and may provide tremendous effects rapidly. You’ll feel more alert and aware, healthier, and better equipped to deal with day-to-day issues. You may have years of yoga experience, but if it’s mostly restricted to the hatha form most typically practiced in the West, musician-instructor Maya Fiennes’ Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress may be extremely surprising—in a good way. Fiennes, who lives in London, describes kundalini as “the mother of all yoga” and “among the easiest styles of yoga to learn” (not to mention a good way to “prepare for the Aquarian Age” that begins in 2012, for those keeping track of the calendar), a combination of movement, breath, and chanting designed to awaken, energize, and relax. All of this is correct, but the contrast with the more common hatha style is stark. Whereas the latter typically focuses on holding poses and gradually but subtly deepening them over several long breaths, kundalini features almost constant movement; rapid side arm extensions and seated lifts and drops (similar to jumping up and down on a trampoline from a seated position) are just two examples of the intense but highly enjoyable routines demonstrated here, and although the entire 60-minute program is done seated, on the back, or on all fours- Indeed, pranayama activity, such as the “breath of fire,” with short, quick, strong inhalations and exhalations, is rapid and intense. Fiennes, who also provided the rhythmic, throbbing music, provides straightforward directions and encouragement without being frivolous or unduly serious—a excellent balance, just like the exercise itself.
