I had coffee with my buddy and Profit. Power. Pursuit. guest Kari Chapin during the 2014 Pioneer Nation conference. Kari became enamored with this lady who could read body language, harness the power of color, and boost confidence via power posing.

Kari introduced me to Vanessa Van Edwards when we returned to the conference. Vanessa is a self-described recovering uncomfortable person, author, and behavioral investigator.

She opted to study human behavior and the art of interpersonal communication since she struggled with it as a child. She launched her business to scratch her own itch, as Chase Jarvis would say.

Vanessa is a fantastic entrepreneur because of her innate curiosity and analytical attitude. She welcomes what she doesn’t know rather than avoiding it. She stated:

“It signifies you’re doing something well when you come to something you don’t know.”

In fact, she believes that if you aren’t finding anything that makes you think, “Hmmm… I should Google that!” on a monthly basis, you should push yourself more.

I realize how frustrating it is when you don’t grasp anything about your business, when you don’t have a solution to an issue, or when you just miss a key piece of information. Those things irritate me as well!

Vanessa, on the other hand, is an excellent counterbalance. She compared business to a sport. You must first train. Then you begin participating in recreational leagues. Then you advance through the ranks, playing JV, Varsity, and so forth.

Entrepreneurship is similar. You can’t expect to get from training to MVP status overnight. To achieve the performance level you desire, you must work every day to improve your talents, problem-solving abilities, and inventiveness…
