Ligia M. Houben, MA, FT, FAAGC, CPC, is a Thanatology Fellow and an American Academy of Grief Counseling Fellow. Ligia is a worldwide grief therapist and author who has dedicated her life to assisting others in transforming their losses and lives. Houben is the author of Counseling Hispanics Through Loss, Grieving, and Bereavement: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals, a pioneer in dealing with Hispanic individuals with grief (Springer, 2011). Ligia has spoken at the Association for Death, Education, and Counseling (ADEC), the Baptist Health System, and the International Death, Grief, and Bereavement Conference at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse regarding the needs of Hispanic people in times of loss.
She helped to form the first grief support group in her home Nicaragua, PUDE – an acronym for Personas Unidas en el Dolor y la Esperanza (Individuals Joined by Pain and Hope), and she co-trained Hispanic people to be facilitators in church bereavement support groups for nine years.
Ligia M. Houben is a former adjunct professor of ethics, religion, and death and dying at Florida International University, Miami Dade College, and Kaplan University. In Miami, Florida, she founded My Meaningful Life, LLC and the Center for Transforming Lives. Ligia has spoken at enterprises, educational institutions, and health care organizations such as Baptist Health System Florida, Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, and Vitas Healthcare. She has been on various radio and television shows, including CNN Espaol, NPR, NBC, and Univisión.
