Shotcrete has been widely utilized for concrete structural repair and retrofitting. Shotcrete is being used for substantial rehabilitation and retrofit in an increasing number of huge facilities, particularly in the hydropower industry. The US Army Corps of Engineers has recently been working on structural changes to reinforced concrete draft tube exits from turbines at the Ice Harbor Lock and Dam on the Snake River in Washington. These structural changes, together with the installation of new advanced technology hydropower producing turbines, are designed to enhance hydraulic conditions for fish passage while also increasing electricity generating efficiency. As part of the draft tube reshaping, an expedited wet-mix steel fiber reinforced wet-mix shotcrete up to 2 m thick overhead was required. Overhead shotcrete application to such thickness is uncommon, posing a difficulty for the designer and contractor. This presentation describes the structural alteration to the draft tube that was accomplished successfully utilizing wet-mix shotcrete.
Objectives of Learning:
Shotcrete technology advancement
Modifications to hydro dam structures
Application of wet-mix shotcrete from above
Quality control monitoring and inspection for shotcrete applications
Dr. Lihe (John) Zhang is a concrete, shotcrete, grout, and fiber reinforced concrete/shotcrete engineer. He has worked on projects involving concrete engineering, concrete and shotcrete structure assessment and evaluation, tunnel and mining concrete and shotcrete structure design, fiber reinforced concrete design and testing, construction, quality control testing and inspection, repair, and rehabilitation.
He is an ACI 506, Shotcrete, and 544 Fiber Reinforced Concrete voting member. He chairs the ACI 506.F Underground Shotcrete Committee and the American Shotcrete Association (ASA) Technical Committee. Dr. Zhang was the ASA President (2018). He has approximately 30 papers published in journals, magazines, and conference proceedings.
