Part 2 of a two-part series

Attorneys who take this course will realize that getting a positive ruling on “meeting or equaling” a specified mental handicap is now considerably more challenging. As an applied course, the instructor will demonstrate how attorneys can effectively develop and argue the theory of their case for 12.02 Neurocognitive Disorders, 12.05 Intellectual Disorders, and 12.11 Neuro-developmental Disorders using psychometric test findings (WAIS-IV & WMS-IV) contained in DDS consultative exams. The course handout will include hands-on resource material that can be used directly to cases.

If time allows, the teacher will discuss posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is no longer included in 12.06 Anxiety-Related Disorders. Attorneys will see that, while its inclusion in the revised 12.15 Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders is theoretically sound, it is nearly hard to fulfill or meet definitionally.

Ronald P. Houston, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in Northern Utah who provides expert evidence on Social Security disability, personal injury, workers compensation, reduced capacity, the death penalty, and child custody disputes. He is particularly interested in neuropsychological testing and brain activity. He also teaches seminars for Psychological Institute Educational Services (PIES), an online platform that offers continuing education courses to attorneys and other medico-legal professionals on issues such as disability, personal injury, and workers’ compensation. Dr. Houston received his clinical education at Cornell University Medical College – The New York Hospital and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He often gives presentations to attorneys at the national and state levels on a number of issues addressing the relationship between psychology and the law.
