This talk will highlight fundamental ideas important to modern successful systemic treatment. The relationship between modern systemic treatments and studies undertaken by the Palo Alto Group and the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in the 1950s and 1960s will be discussed. Contributions from Palo Alto Group members Gregory Bateson, Don Jackson, MD, John Weakland, Jay Haley, and William Fry will be included. Seven specific, teachable principles and strategies will be taught to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment.
Objectives of Education:
Develop an operational grasp of the Palo Alto Group’s communication / interaction centered theory and interviewing procedures.
Demonstrate an awareness of the abilities required to translate specific diagnostic classifications into relational interactions within the patient/present client’s living circumstances.
Describe how to successfully and efficiently assist change by asking relationship-focused inquiries.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*

Wendel A. Ray, Ph.D., is the Hammond Endowed Professor of Education and Professor of Family System Theory in The University of Louisiana-Marriage Monroe’s and Therapy Program (ULM). Dr. Ray, the former Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, and a former member of the MRI Brief Therapy Center and the MRI Strategic Family Therapy Project, is still an MRI Senior Research Fellow.
