Trilogy vs. Micky Ward

Gatti only fought once in 2001, when he moved up in weight to face welterweight Oscar De La Hoya, who beat him by technical knockout in five rounds. Gatti returned to the light welterweight class in 2002 and knocked out former world champion Terronn Millett in round four. He subsequently split a pair of ten-round decisions with “Irish” Micky Ward, losing the first but winning the second. Gatti-Ward I also garnered “Fight of the Year” honors by Ring Magazine, and the 9th round was deemed the Round of the Century by Emanuel Steward. He and Ward had a rematch on June 7, 2003. Gatti dropped his arm after breaking his twice-repaired right hand with an uppercut in the fourth. Gatti dominated the sixth round, but was caught with an overhand to the top of the head a second before the bell sounded and fell. Gatti won the game with scores of 96-93, 96-93, and 97-92. Ring Magazine called their third battle “Fight of the Year” once more. Gatti vs. Ward I and III are also among HBO’s top ten fights of the decade.
