“The Art of Peace is to restrain aggressiveness without inflicting hurt,” Ueshiba famously stated. This line appears to encapsulate both the physical and philosophical principles of aikido.
In addition, aikido is essentially a defensive art. In other words, practitioners are trained to use their attacker’s aggressiveness and might. This is accomplished through the use of throws, joint locks (especially standing joint locks), and pins.
Aikido is often learnt by practicing pre-arranged two-person katas or forms. In teaching, one person takes on the role of the attacker (uke), while the other uses aikido methods to subdue their assailant (nage). It should be observed that many of the pre-arranged blows that are fought against in practice appear to mirror the conceivable movements of a sword, indicating that aikido has historically prioritized weapons defense.
Higher level trainees may also practice actual weapon use, free sparring, and defense against numerous assailants.
Aikido’s Fundamental Objectives
Aikido’s fundamental purpose is to protect oneself against an adversary in the most peaceful and least harmful manner possible.
