In my final year of medical school at Cambridge University, I began filming YouTube videos. It was the summer of 2017, and I had 0 views, 0 subscribers, and $0 in income. After 18 months, my YouTube channel had 100,000 followers and was earning as much as my full-time job as a doctor in the UK. And today, as of May 2021, my channel has 1.7 million members and I earn more than £100,000 ($130k) every month, while putting in 5-10 hours per week. It’s bloody silly, I know.
The Key to Over 100,000 Subscribers
Over the last three years, I’ve learnt a lot about what it takes to create an audience from the ground up, constantly deliver content, and monetize in a non-spammy way. I’ve spent over $30,000 on courses and coaching programs in an attempt to discover the secret sauce that allows a channel and a business to flourish. And guess what? There is no mystery. It’s largely a question of —
Creating content that your target audience will find beneficial
This will be posted on YouTube once a week.
Repeat for at least two years.
That is all that is required. I guarantee that if you follow this easy three-step process, your life will alter in ways you never imagined. For starters, you’ll acquire highly valuable talents, earn ‘passive’ cash, and make friends with incredible individuals from all over the world. You may even receive notes from followers expressing how your material has impacted their lives. But, as with anything else, getting started and maintaining quality and consistency is easier said than done. The Difficulties of Being a YouTuber
It’s intimidating to have been making videos for almost two years. In the early phases, you won’t see much growth or money.
You’ll have to overcome your fear of being judged by friends, family, and strangers on the internet.
You’ll have to figure out what you’re going to say and why anyone cares what you have to say.
Cameras, microphones, lighting, video editing, and post-production are all skills you’ll need.
You’ll be concerned that you’ll run out of ideas.
You’ll be constantly thinking about the YouTube algorithm, while also attempting not to think about it.
You’ll end yourself haggling with companies, making up amounts out of thin air since you don’t know how much to charge them.
And you’ll have to accomplish all of this (and more) while managing your work, academics, relationships, and health, all while trying to enjoy the ride and prevent burnout.
This is difficult. It’s a lot of labor. But it’s also a lot of fun, and if you can pull it off, it’s truly life-changing.
The true “secret,” if there is one, is to create a SYSTEM around your content production so that you can effectively crank out quality material that raises your audience and money without taking up a lot of your time. Instead of viewing your YouTube channel as a personal effort, consider it as a machine. A machine that accepts ideas as input, refines them into value content that your audience enjoys, and effectively monetises itself across different asset classes.
I’ve established one for my channel and business, and I can help you construct one as well.
The YouTuber Academy for Part-Time Work
The Part-Time YouTuber Academy is a 6-week live online course in which I will teach you everything I know about building and growing your YouTube channel into a sustainable machine that churns out valuable content for your audience and generates healthy passive income for you without you having to quit your job.
It’s built on the Infinite Content Engine, which I created to help me grow my channel from zero to 1.7 million members (with $1,500,000+ in yearly income) while working full-time as a doctor.
We ran Cohort 1 in November 2020 and Cohort 2 in March 2021, with outstanding outcomes and beautiful feedback from over 600 students.
Cohort 3 runs from June 7th to July 16th, 2021. We’ll offer a mix of live Zoom lectures, Q&A Office Hours, homework video assignments, and group support sessions each week to help you launch a new channel or expand an existing one.
The Core Live Lectures will be place twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays at 16:00 BST / 08:00 PT / 11:00 ET. Each live event will last 60-90 minutes and will include open Q&A. All of the sessions will be recorded (and you’ll have lifelong access to them), so you may go at your own pace if that’s what you want. We’ll also offer Guest Workshops, small group support sessions, and social clubs each week to help you get the most out of the course. By the completion of the 6-week program…
You’ll have launched your YouTube channel (if you haven’t already) with six published videos.
You’ll have a robust, streamlined framework in place to support the following 3-6 months of material.
With strategies to improve your charm, you’ll feel considerably more at ease in front of the camera.
You’ll get my recommendations for gear and studio settings for every budget, so you can improve your production value while staying focused on your content.
You’ll understand how to develop your specialty and have a mechanism in place to ensure you never run out of content ideas — The Idea Generation Machine.
You’ll have a framework for arranging your videos that appeals to both your audience and the YouTube algorithm (the HIVEs Framework).
You’ll learn how to use the Artery Method to boost your growth by efficiently reusing your content across different channels.
You will explore the many monetisation alternatives accessible to creators and how to leverage them to produce passive money or high-quality leads for your business.
You’ll understand the need of assembling a team as soon as you can afford it, and you’ll have a plan for outsourcing editing and employing additional team members.
