Knowing that you are completely loved is one of the most potent anti-anxiety vaccines. —Sheryl Paul, The Wisdom of Anxiety
Linda:
A large number of people face the everyday struggle of dealing with anxiety. Anxiety is characterized by a sense of dread or foreboding connected with a threat that does not exist in the present time. Worry, intrusive thoughts, obsessions, sleeplessness, obsessive behaviors, and physical sensations are all manifestations of anxiety.
A tiny number of people who suffer from anxiety get full-fledged panic episodes. The great majority suffers from a milder, yet nonetheless debilitating, chronic type of anxiety. They present to the public an appearance of confidence while disguising their worry in shame. Behind that arrogance, however, lurks insecurity, with negative mental signals such as “You’re broken. You’re not up to the challenge. You are both nasty and incorrect. You’re frail. You’re not intelligent enough. You’re basically broken. Don’t even bother trying; you’ll fail.”
We come out of hiding behind the image to be honest with each other when we make a commitment with a partner to utilize the relationship to become a more loving person. The process of reducing anxiety intensity then begins in earnest. We realize that we are all such a mixed bag, with both our unique talents and weaknesses. We have enormous successes as well as spectacular failures. We are made up of both our golden splendor and our black shadow. This applies to everyone, from the most successful, accomplished, wealthy, and enlightened to those who look average, or even those who fail to meet society’s standards. The one thing we all have in common is a desire for love.
We begin to relax as our amazing sensitivity is addressed with tenderness. When another person accepts our fear, grief, loneliness, rage, and disappointment, it inspires us to create place for all of our feelings rather than hiding them. We learn to perceive ourselves as competent to confront the problems of our lives when we practice addressing our own inner thoughts and feelings with inquiry and amazement rather than guilt, fear, and hatred on a regular basis. Then our anxiety levels decrease.
