The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) will be discussed in this lecture, which is a specialized treatment approach for mental health professionals who work with the long-term effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Complex Trauma (C-PTSD).

NARM is an innovative methodology for managing relational, developmental, cultural, and intergenerational trauma by addressing the disordered attachment patterns that create psychobiological symptoms and interpersonal issues. These early, unconscious patterns of disconnection, referred to by NARM as Adaptive Survival Styles, have a profound impact on our identity, emotions, physiology, behavior, and relationships. NARM provides a strong paradigm for treating the life-long effect of ACEs and C-PTSD and encouraging trauma-informed treatment by working directly with the deeply established neurobiological patterns of shame, self-hatred, and self-sabotage.

This developmentally oriented, neuroscientifically informed strategy, as defined in Dr. Laurence Heller’s book Healing Developmental Trauma, connects traditional psychotherapy with somatic techniques within a relational practice framework. NARM is a mindfulness-based clinical therapy because its technique is founded on a phenomenological approach to addressing identity and Self consciousness – who we actually are beneath these stereotyped ways of responding to ourselves and the environment. In this light, the NARM approach to complex trauma recovery can be viewed as a vehicle for personal and communal development.

Brad Kammer, LMFT LPCC, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Professional Clinical Counselor in California. Brad is a Somatic Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience primarily in the realm of trauma. He has specialized in treating both PTSD and C-PTSD, and has lately helped to raise awareness of the significance of knowing how to treat Complex Trauma (C-PTSD), which includes attachment, developmental, relational, cultural, and intergenerational trauma.

Brad started his work as a Humanitarian Aid Worker in Asia, where he was exposed to personal and societal suffering. He became deeply committed to assisting individuals and communities in the transformation of trauma. Brad’s work has subsequently centered on the convergence of Somatic Psychology, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and insights from Spiritual Traditions and Traditional Cultures.

Brad is committed to delivering trauma-informed care to individuals and communities outside of the therapeutic environment. Brad has been a college professor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for about 20 years. He has worked in community education, outreach, and consulting for a variety of communities and organizations. Recently, he started a podcast called Transforming Trauma to assist provide a better knowledge of trauma recovery to the globe.

Brad is a practitioner and educator for two trauma-focused therapy approaches: Somatic Experiencing® (SE®) and the NeuroAffective Relational Model® (NARM®). Brad has studied and taught alongside his mentor, Dr. Laurence Heller, the originator of NARM, for over two decades. Brad is a NARM Master Therapist, Consultant, and Senior Trainer, as well as the Training Director for the NARM Training Institute. He teaches NARM and SE globally and has counseled hundreds of SE and NARM students worldwide.

Brad lives in a small town in Northern California with his family where he likes everything involving nature, travel, cooking, and learning about and interacting with new people.
