Hello, my name is Andrew Warner, and I am the founder of Mixergy.

For years, I interviewed founders, and they kept telling me how powerful email marketing is.
But the more I speak with them privately, the more they agree that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to gather email addresses and grow an audience, as well as to get people to open emails and even to achieve meaningful purchases through email.

The same thing has happened with our marketing emails.
I discovered it was due to two issues with email marketing…
1. Excessive email
I invited my Facebook friends to upload screenshots of how much unread email they had. This inbox graphic is quite standard.
Every marketer is sending emails to people’s inboxes. So when you send your message, it has to compete with every other email in the system.
It’s a never-ending box of tension.
2. People prefer texting applications to email.
I noticed that I utilize messaging applications to connect with my team about the marketing emails we plan to send to our list.
People are crazy about texting applications.
They make message delivery extremely quick.
The replies are shorter and simpler to read.
And they’re just more entertaining.
Consider the last person you kissed or the person with whom you do the most work. Do you communicate with them via email? Do you use a texting app instead?
So I conducted an experiment…
Can I utilize messaging applications to reach my audience if that’s how people like to communicate? Will they open and click on what I send them? Would they purchase?
So I tried it out. And what I saw astounded me…
I received 80% open and click rates.
Who the hell gets email open rates of 80% or higher?! That’s right, almost no one. I assumed it was just my Mixergy audience. Maybe they’re simply a little weird, advanced, or unique.
So I started talking to other individuals who use messaging applications to interact with their staff, and they say it’s not unusual—80% is high, but more than 50% is normal.
It’s not unprecedented.
Because advertisers haven’t overloaded this medium, engagement rates are quite high. And because checking Facebook Messenger is so quick, people immediately open it up to see what’s there.
Compare that to MailChimp’s typical email open rate of roughly 20% and click rate of 2-5%.
“But, Andrew, my email open rates aren’t THAT awful…”
It’s not surprising that your email open and click rates are greater than MailChimp’s average.
But are they really 80%? Most likely not.
So why aren’t we vying for a share of this 80%? Why are we still relying solely on email?
I’m not claiming email is extinct. Keep doing what’s working for you. I’m suggesting you should be aware of THIS as well, since the open rates and engagement are too high to ignore.
And there’s another significant reason I’m enthusiastic about this…
Aside from the incredible open and conversion rates, this is the next great thing in marketing and sales.
Just as email surpassed snail mail.
