The Guard Game
This is Rafa’s main source of income. He is notorious for being especially deadly with open guards. Collar and Sleeve guard, as well as De La Riva guard, are his hallmark guards. Collar and sleeve guard (the posture is arguably best defined here by John Danaher) provides a number of opportunities and attacks, particularly triangles and omoplatas, which Rafael used frequently during his career. Most of the time, he will take an opponent down from De La Riva guard by getting the DLR hook deep and grasping the opponent’s back to trigger his fall. When he has his opponent down, he will frequently try for the Berimbolo by maintaining the DLR hook in place and placing the other foot over his opponent’s torso to limit his upper mobility. He’ll then perform a side roll and try to take the back.
Rafa has also been known to attack a number of different De La Riva alternatives such as armbars and omoplatas. He also frequently employs the Reverse De La Riva guard, from which he approaches the “Kiss of the Dragon” stance. This is where he goes beneath the opponent’s legs, giving him a plethora of possibilities to attack the back or simple sweep.
