Deaf and hard of hearing persons typically face unique problems and possibilities when seeking trauma resolution and healing help. According to research, this demographic is roughly twice as likely as hearing people to report trauma events and fulfill PTSD criteria. In addition to increased reported rates of child maltreatment, intimate relationship violence, sexual assault, and criminal victimization. This video will go through how the Somatic Experiencing framework and tools may be used to enhance better quality of care and more successful results for Deaf and hard of hearing people and communities. There will be a special emphasis on effective SE adaptation for Deaf and hard of hearing clients, as well as measures to facilitate access to Somatic Experiencing training among Deaf and hard of hearing SE students and practitioners.
Dr. Cara Miller earned a B.A. in Psychology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Miller completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Missouri Counseling Center in Columbia, Missouri, and her post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California Berkeley Counseling and Psychological Services in Berkeley, California, after completing practica at the Counseling and Psychological Services centers of Gallaudet and George Mason Universities. Dr. Miller, a generalist by training, has worked with college students, young adults, and adults of all ages in higher education, counseling centers, and inpatient settings.
Dr. Miller, who specializes in the psychology of human-animal interaction, has presented on assistance dog partnerships, disability advocacy, and the human-animal bond to professionals in the assistance dog industry, legislators, trainers, and organizations in the public and private sectors on a national and international scale.
