Despite inherent contradictions in its “hybrid model” base, Dr. Kernberg believes the DSM-V proposal is a beneficial development in the understanding of personality disorders. Bottom line, the psychiatric research community is suffering with a lack of an integrated notion of personality development and structure.
Objectives of Education:
Examine the relationships between neurobiological, symbolic-intentional, and behavioral systems in novel ways.
Look for underlying dynamic organizational patterns in descriptive personality characteristics.

Otto Kernberg, MD Related items and seminars: 66Otto Kernberg, MD, is a psychoanalyst and Weill Cornell Medical College professor of psychiatry. He is most recognized for his psychoanalytic views on the structure of borderline personalities and narcissistic pathology. Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College and Director of the Personality Disorders Institute at New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Westchester Division. Dr. Kernberg was the International Psychoanalytic Association’s Past President. He is also the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research’s Training and Supervising Analyst. Dr. Kernberg has written twelve books and co-written twelve more. Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality: Focusing on Object Relations is his most recent book, and Handbook of Dynamic Psychotherapy for Higher Level Personality Pathology is his most recent book.

Erickson Foundation Newsletter, the Director of Training for the Southern California Society of Ericksonian Psychotherapy and Hypnosis, and the Clinical Director of the Orange County Ericksonian Integrative Medical Institute. He is board-certified in traumatology and a diplomate in integrative medicine, behavioral medicine, and psychopharmacology.
