DescriptionDescription:
Historically, treatments aimed to transform people’s perceptions of the world by reason and insight, conditioning and behavior modification, or medicines and prescriptions. The trauma response is a collection of defensive physical reflexes that people first use to defend themselves, both from harm and subsequently, from feeling the crushing totality of their terror, helplessness, and anguish. However, as time passes, this avoidance causes individuals to become locked and stuck in the past, unable to be truly present, in the here and now, and unable to progress in life. The guilt, loss, and humiliation connected with the initial occurrence are fixed in the defensive trauma response and repeat in the body over and over. Dr. Levine investigates the implications of Body-Oriented Psychotherapy and contemporary neuroscience studies on how the brain and body process emotional information.
Objectives of Education:
Separate top-down processing from bottom-up processing.
In order to resolve trauma, use procedural (body) memory.
To transcend traumatic events, create new interoceptive experiences.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
