Carl Rogers, Ph.D., was a well-known American psychologist who was a proponent of the humanistic (or client-centered) approach to psychology. Rogers is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy research, and the American Psychological Association (APA) recognized him with the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions in 1956 for his groundbreaking work. Carl obtained his Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1931. Rogers has led the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Applied Psychology, and the American Academy of Psychotherapists. He has eight honorary doctorates and the American Humanist Association’s Humanist of the Year Award. The American Psychological Association presented him with two awards: the inaugural Distinguished Professional Contribution Award and the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award for study in the field of psychotherapy. Rogers also earned the American Board of Professional Psychology’s Award for Professional Achievement. He has written or co-written 12 books and several papers in psychological, psychiatric, and educational periodicals since 1930.
