Original air date: December 6, 2012 DescriptionDescription:
Louis (Ludwig) van Beethoven (1770-1827) grew raised in a severely chaotic family. He underwent a suicidal melancholy in the fall of 1802, just as his reputation and popularity were spreading over Europe. Beethoven reinvented himself emotionally and artistically as a hero facing fate itself, using equal parts self-delusion and sheer willpower. Armed with this knowledge, he rose from his malaise in early 1803, and went on to create a collection of work unlike anything anybody had ever imagined. Beethoven’s new musical vision was centered on his notion that music should be a medium for profound self-expression: his therapist’s couch. This presentation will look at Beethoven’s life and times before focusing on his Symphony No. 5 as an example of how instrumental music can become a highly individualized confessional.
