Over the last 40 years, couples’ expectations about the role of sexuality in intimate relationships have shifted considerably. We’ll look at the fundamental concepts of the romantic ideal, such as how we want our partner to meet our desires for connection, belonging, and continuity, as well as to provide a feeling of transcendence, mystery, and passion. We will map a culturally appropriate strategy to working with want issues in couples by examining the cultural values of love and respect, freedom and responsibility, and dependency vs. autonomy. We will also investigate the distinction between explicitly given gender roles and the post-feminist egalitarian approach.

Objectives of Education:

To describe the underlying cultural processes that may be at the root of an erotic deadlock between a couple.
Describe three techniques to assist a couple become more flexible in the face of sexual and emotional stalemates.
