Couples counseling generally pathologizes porn while legitimizing the user’s partner’s problems. While this technique may appear to be reasonable, it seldom results in increased sexual/relationship pleasure. How can we support both partners as they try to define their conduct, contract, and emotions? This session looks at a novel approach to intrapsychic conflict and power conflicts in the context of porn consumption. We’ll look at fundamental relationship concerns such as: Is arguing over pornography a method to avoid dealing with flaws in a sexual (or non-sexual) relationship? Is one or both spouses struggling with body image issues? Is watching porn infidelity?
Objectives of Education:
Discuss three frequent non-sexual concerns in couples that are at odds over pornography.
Mention three sexual concerns that are frequent in couples who are at odds over pornography.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
