DescriptionDescription:
Our clinical experience is supported by research. We may teach partners a variety of techniques, but in times of triggering, emotional inundation, skills are forgotten. Why? Because we have outgrown our grownup selves. The limbic system has taken control after our thinking brain has shut down. An inner kid component has taken control of the steering wheel. This session provides a paradigm for working with the traumatized aspects of the partners we treat by allowing persons to enter into conscious interaction with those parts, loving, understanding, and eventually confining them. Maturity occurs when we confront our immature inner children and cease dumping them on our spouses. An enlarged model of trauma will be given, covering concerns of shame and grandiosity, intrusion and abandonment, as well as how they affect marital interactions. Participants will discover how to enable partners in partnerships to “detach from result,” deal with disappointment, let go of “relentless optimism,” and care for their own damaged or adaptable inner children through conversation, demonstration, and film extract. Finally, we will discuss the couples therapist’s own differentiation—how we must employ the same abilities we create in our clients in treatment.
Objectives of Education:
Introduce and explain the concept of “mutual triggering,” which describes how early trauma fosters recurrent, dysfunctional marital interactions.
Distinguish between two sorts of inner children: the wounded kid and the adapted child.
Describe specific ways for empowering the partner’s adult portion to deal with trauma triggering and shifting the recurrent interaction pattern.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
