William Glasser, MD, was an American psychiatrist who received his MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1953. The University of San Francisco bestowed an honorary doctorate in human letters on William. He was the founder and director of the Institute for Reality Therapy, as well as the author and editor of ten books on reality therapy and education. He was also the creator of Choice Theory. His ideas, which emphasize personal choice, personal responsibility, and personal transformation, are regarded as controversial by mainstream psychiatrists, who prefer to classify psychiatric syndromes as “illnesses” and frequently prescribe psychotropic medications to treat mental disorders.
