William Glasser, MD, was an American psychiatrist who obtained his MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1953. The University of San Francisco bestowed an honorary degree in human letters to William. He was the founder and director of the Institute for Reality Treatment, as well as the author and editor of 10 publications on reality therapy and education. He was also the creator of Choice Theory. His theories, which emphasize human choice, personal responsibility, and personal change, are seen as controversial by orthodox psychiatrists, who prefer to label psychiatric syndromes as “illnesses” and frequently prescribe psychotropic medicines to treat mental problems.

Mary Goulding, MSW, is a prominent proponent of Transactional Analysis. She and her husband, Robert Goulding, invented Redecision therapy, which combines Transactional Analysis and Gestalt. In Watsonville, California, they co-founded the Western Institute for Group and Family Therapy and co-authored two professional publications about their technique. There is also a Redecision model edited volume. Mary has served on the International Transactional Analysis Association’s Board of Trustees and is a Teaching Member of the organization. Her M.S.W. was awarded in 1960 by the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare.

Harriet Lerner, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and feminist theorist and therapist.
She worked as a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, and as a faculty member and supervisor at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry from 1972 until 2001. She worked significantly on the psychology of women and family connections during this time period, modifying standard psychoanalytic ideas to fit feminist and family systems viewpoints.

Alexander Lowen, MD, was a physician and psychotherapist from the United States. In the 1940s and early 1950s, as a student of Wilhelm Reich in New York, he co-developed bioenergetic analysis, a type of mind-body psychotherapy, with his then-colleague, John Pierrakos. Lowen was the creator and former executive director of New York City’s International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis.
