When most people think of trauma, they envision intensely dramatic events such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks. However, the majority of people who suffer trauma do it in a more subtle and persistent way inside their own family. Claudia Black, Ph.D., will provide a portrait of addiction in the family, beginning with a genogram and presenting an overlay of how bad child experiences, emotional desertion, and outright aggression are all parts of the trauma. She will talk about shame screens, which are ways people try to gain control over or avoid their emotional anguish, as well as how trauma is linked to multi-addictive and co-occurring illnesses.

 

Objectives of Education:

Determine how the trauma reactions of flight, fight, and freeze manifest in the family affected by addiction.
Describe both Big T and Little T traumas that typically occur in an addicted household.
Explain the connection between trauma and multiaddictive and co-occurring disorders.

Claudia Black, Ph.D., is known across the world for her innovative and cutting-edge work with family systems and addiction illnesses. In the late 1970s, her work with children affected by drug and alcohol addiction inspired the establishment of the codependency and developmental trauma sectors. The Claudia Black Young Adult Center was founded on Dr. Black’s desire to assist young adults in overcoming problems and strengthening families. Dr. Black is not only the clinical architect of this ground-breaking treatment approach; she also works closely with the treatment team, patients, and their families.
