Helen Singer Kaplan (February 6, 1929 – August 17, 1995) was an Austrian-American sex therapist and the creator of the first clinic in the United States for sexual disorders established within a medical school.
The New York Times identified Kaplan as “a trailblazer among scientific-oriented sex therapists, recognized for her efforts to blend some of psychoanalysis’ ideas and approaches with behavioral tactics.”
[1]
She was also called the “Sex Queen” for her position as a pioneer in sex therapy during the sexual revolution in 1960s America, as well as her championing of the concept that people should enjoy sexual activity as much as possible, rather than viewing it as unclean or destructive. Her dissertation’s major goal is to examine psychosexual dysfunctions because these disorders are among the most common, concerning, and upsetting medical symptoms in modern times. [2]
