This discussion recommends categorizing psychotherapy techniques into two categories: “psychological therapies,” which focus on the growth and development of the individual psyche, and “social therapies,” which address wider concerns of connection and the social web. My goal is to provide up a more open space for discourse between two historically distinct points of view that stem from different conceptual foundations.

Lynn Hoffman, A.C.S.W., is an internationally famous family therapy theorist and presenter who has produced several books and papers on the subject, including Techniques of Family Therapy, Foundations of Family Therapy, Milan Systemic Family Therapy, and Exchanging Voices.
She is now a consultant to North Central Human Services’ Center for Collaborative Studies in Gardner, Massachusetts, and a member of the PhD program faculty at Smith School of Social Work. She is an emeritus faculty member of New York’s Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy presented Hoffman with the Life Achievement Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Field of Family Therapy in 1988. She is a member of the Family Process editorial board. Adelphi School of Social Work awarded her an M.S.W. in 1971.
