Dr. Milton Erickson’s ability to “read the patient” and acquire information from them in order to construct a setting in which change was easy to obtain is an area that has frequently been missed owing to the difficulty in understanding the technique that he was utilizing. How was he closely studying the patient in order to obtain personal information from them? Several approaches for being an alert and strategic therapist will be described and shown.

This ability to “read the patient,” when combined with one of the most valuable techniques in Ericksonian therapy, the seeding technique, results in a powerful intervention tool that allows the therapist to establish a proper context for intervention and create a learning environment in which change is easily achievable. It will be discussed how to mix them to ensure therapeutic success.

In addition, many strategies will be explored to make predictions for the patient utilizing all of the previously gathered information to assist establish the ideal situation for hypnotic induction and intervention.
