Advanced Courses
Students are being enrolled for the future.

Tacoma Public Schools recognizes promise in all kids and thinks that all students can succeed. That is why, during the school year, suitable high school students are automatically enrolled in advanced programs or courses.

The Academic Acceleration and Rigor Policy was established by the school board in June 2013 to help achieve the district’s academic excellence strategic goal of all students performing at or above grade level, as well as to comply with a state senate statute.

Only the second district in the state to employ auto enrollment into advanced programs, generally known as Academic Acceleration, this will be a significant step in further cultivating a college-going culture and preparing every student for life beyond high school.

TPS is dedicated to achieving equity in all of its schools. Our instructors can successfully use equity-based and culturally responsive teaching practices that assist all kids achieve by enhancing our cultural understanding of the youth we serve.

Exclusion from Advanced Programs

TPS will evaluate state testing scores in reading, writing, math, and science to decide whether kids are eligible for advanced programs. Additional sources of information that may be evaluated include student achievement on the College Board’s ReadiStep and PSAT examinations, as well as grades. Students who do not reach the standard on the assigned evaluation will still be able to enroll in advanced programs. There are no requirements.
