DO YOU FREEZE IN FRONT OF A REAL SPANISH SPEAKER?
If you’ve studied Spanish previously, you’ve undoubtedly focused on the “stuff” of the language – grammar, vocabulary, and maybe pronunciation.
That makes sense. That is, of course, the first step.
But what use is all that cerebral information if you can’t apply it in real-life discussions with native Spanish speakers?
Sure, you’ve heard of it. But if every time you want to compose a new phrase, you have to scour your brain for the correct sentence structure, conjugation, or that word you can never remember…
…then you’ve got a problem.
Isn’t it your goal to have natural conversations with real people?
Then you must not only study the grammar and vocabulary, but also grow comfortable using it.
And the only way to get confidence in conversing in Spanish is to converse in Spanish frequently.
So, assuming you’ve completed the whole Duolingo curriculum…
I was listening to the Pimsleur recordings…
Have you taken any academic classes?
I memorized hundreds of vocabulary terms…
…but still can’t speak Spanish, which is NORMAL.
It’s not that you lack linguistic skills. It’s because you’ve been omitting half of the procedure – communicating!
Becoming Conversationally Fluent in Spanish is divided into TWO stages.
Part one consists of learning the language’s “stuff” (the vocab, the grammar, the pronunciation, etc).
Part two is to gain confidence in applying that information by engaging in several conversations.
