The BBC produced this series, Way of the Warrior, which broadcast eight episodes in 1983 and has become a martial arts classic.
The series of films, which is commented on by John Waterman, is of excellent quality and in the spirit of the BBC.
Fortunately, there are some budo fans who have taped the series.
And now, one of them has burned the entire series on DVD.
He’s done an outstanding job, in my opinion.
The initial recording was done on Betamax cassettes, which gave the greatest quality home video recording at the time.
The tapes were played back on a high-quality Betamax player, and the composite output was fed into a professional digital enhancer/decoder, allowing color balance, color shift, and time base correction to be adjusted.
He thinks that the transfers are superior than the original recordings.
I don’t know whether that’s true, but the end product is definitely as excellent as it gets when you consider the source material.
The episodes are as follows:
1 – “The New Way” by Shorinji Kempo
“The Indian Way” by Kalari
3 – “The Sporting Way” Aikido and Kendo
T’ai Chi – “The Soft Way” 4 (Also included, Hsing Yi and Ba Gua)
“The Fillipino Way” by Escrima
6 – Karate – “The Empty Hand Way” 7 – “The Hard Way” Kung Fu (Includes ultra-rare Dan Inosanto training!!) Episode 8 is a 60-minute presentation about Ritsuke Otake sensei and Katori Shinto Ryu.
The program includes several kata and situations from Otakes’ lessons.
The program piqued my curiosity.
I’ve watched a lot of Otake sensei do kata, but I also liked seeing the rest of the event.
It provides you another perspective on his attitude to education.
While looking for methods to obtain this DVD, I came upon a website with program details on bbc.co.uk.
It mentioned something about the program’s content.
And towards the conclusion, I noticed an unusual note: “Not to be re-aired without the written consent of Otake sensei”.
I’m not sure why, but I’ve heard that Otake sensei has become more selective about who and where he displays methods and gives school information.
This might be related to others abusing his confidence in the past.

These vids are of OUTSTANDING QUALITY!! The greatest you’ll ever find! I’ve ripped all eight episodes to DivX Home Theatre format! Please express your thoughts in the comments section.
It took me a long time to figure this out!
Enjoy,
