High-Conflict Personalities (HCPs) are becoming more prevalent in our society and in our courts. They exhibit a common pattern of high-intensity emotions, information distortions, and self-defeating behavior as litigants. Their protracted disagreements are marked by unchanging antagonism, the replacement of addressed issues with new unsolved concerns, and a lack of awareness and behavior change. Judicial officers sometimes refer to them as “frequent filers” who can’t seem to get enough of the legal system. They exhibit many of the symptoms of Cluster B personality disorders.
This book presents fundamental ideas and recommendations for judicial officials to utilize in dealing with persons with High-Conflict Personalities in any courtroom, with a focus on family court litigants. According to the information in this book, about half of these incidents appear to include two or more HCPs, whereas the other half may be driven predominantly by one HCP with the other side responding rationally.
This book is intended for judicial authorities. Any family court expert should read Bill Eddy’s book, High Conflict People in Legal Disputes.
