Lawyers nowadays must do more than just know the law. To prosper in a professional legal setting, individuals must cultivate good connections, display empathy and compassion, communicate effectively, manage their time and practice, make ethical value-based judgments, and foster trust.
Using engaging technology and creative learning methodologies, the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) is revolutionizing how new Canadian attorneys receive the information, skills, and competencies they need to succeed.
CPLED is a non-profit organization that gives students with the necessary training before they are called to the Bar in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan.
The Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) was designed by CPLED to assist recent law school graduates in gaining practical legal knowledge and competence in lawyer skills, practice management, professional ethics, and the personal traits required to successfully practice law in Canada.
REP is a new competency-based professional legal education program that teaches students the practical skills necessary to practice in today’s shifting legal context.
Dr. Kara Mitchelmore will discuss how CPLED developed a new competence framework and effectively planned, structured, and implemented PREP.
