Mosaic Arts Online is pleased to present one of the finest examples of sculptural mosaic art. Caitlin Hepworth contributes not just her years of expertise as a sculptor and visual arts instructor, but also her incredible talent and talents as a mosaic artist. This online course walks you through the process of creating sculptural mosaics step by step. Caitlin walks you through the process of creating your own custom created sculptural form that expresses something to you, going beyond the abilities required to mosaic on a three-dimensional item (such as a pot or pre-made form). This lesson will help you grasp the critical link between the shape and the mosaic that is applied to it.
We begin by seeking for inspiration, and our ideas come from the natural world and poetry. Caitlin then demonstrates easy drawing strategies for working through several pencil renderings of your concept. From here, we investigate possibilities in three dimensions using two independent models. Before being scaled up to the ultimate size, these models are shot and appraised.
From here, we develop and reinforce our substrate, and as it cures, we spend a large portion of the course discussing design components like color and value. With our chosen tesserae, we develop a color palette and value scale, as well as investigate which thinset colors work best for the color palette. We also cover the fundamentals of andamento and how to develop and explore various andamento concepts on paper, including sdoppiamento (line splitting). These analytical planning approaches will be useful in all types of mosaic art in the future.
Caitlin will walk you through the steps and considerations involved in creating your mosaic once your substrate has been cured. Color selection, tesserae selection, assessment, edging, finishing, cleaning, and more.
This course offers you with a thorough structure to follow and apply to a variety of mosaic projects. It provides mosaic artists of varying levels of expertise with a combination of important skills as well as freedom for unique creative expression and growth.
Faceting smalti using a hammer and hardie to create textured inclusions in your mosaic is covered in our bonus section.
This course includes a comprehensive downloadable PDF with all of the tools, supplies, and information you’ll need to get started on your sculptural mosaic.
Your Professor
Caitlin Hepworth is a model.
Caitlin Hepworth is a modern sculptural mosaic artist from Australia. Her work is thematic, focusing on tales of regeneration, resilience, and transformation as seen through environmental and psychological lenses.
Caitlin graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the National Art School in 2000 and went on to obtain a Master of Teaching in Visual Arts at USYD in 2002. She has had multiple national and international exhibits, including the Waterhouse National Science Prize 2018 and Sculpture at Scenic World 2018. She was a finalist in the Society of American Mosaic Artists Mosaic Arts International Show in 2016 and 2017, as well as the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics Chicago’s ‘Stories We Tell’ exhibition in 2017. Caitlin won first place in wall hanging mosaic at the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand National Exhibition in 2015.
Caitlin attended the 3rd Symposium of Contemporary Mosaics in Ploaghe, Sardinia, Italy in 2018 at the request of Giulio Menossi. She received the SAMA Robin Brett Scholarship the same year, which enabled her to study with Verdiano Marzi at the Chicago Mosaic School in May 2019.
Caitlin’s sculptural shapes have been described as “darkly enticing” due to her use of smalti glass and stone over ceremonial and allegorical artifacts. Her shapes are made of steel, fiber glass, and cement, and are then mosaiced with hand cut tesserae, allowing her to stamp her material distinctively.
Caitlin is the director of Hughes Studio – School of Visual Art and Mosaic, which is located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Caitlin teaches mosaic, pottery, and visual arts from this location, as well as having guest teachers from all over the world to organize specialist programs.
