Six Sigma (6 ) is a collection of process improvement strategies and technologies. It was invented in 1986 by American engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola. A six sigma process is one in which 99.99966 percent of all possibilities to generate a part feature are statistically likely to be defect-free.
Six Sigma techniques aim to enhance production quality by identifying and eliminating the sources of faults, as well as reducing variability in manufacturing and business processes. History
Motorola was a Six Sigma pioneer, establishing a “six sigma” target for its manufacturing sector. On June 11, 1991, it registered Six Sigma as a service mark under U.S. Service Mark 1,647,704; on December 28, 1993, it registered Six Sigma as a trademark. Motorola credited nearly $17 billion in savings to Six Sigma in 2005.
Six Sigma was also adopted early by Honeywell and General Electric. As GE’s CEO, Jack Welch made it key to his company strategy in 1995, and in 1998 it revealed $350 million in cost savings attributable to Six Sigma, which was a major component in Six Sigma’s spread (this figure subsequently climbed to more than $1 billion). By the late 1990s, over two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies had launched Six Sigma projects to reduce costs and improve quality.
In recent years, some practitioners have blended Six Sigma principles with lean manufacturing to form the Lean Six Sigma technique. Lean manufacturing, which tackles process flow and waste concerns, and Six Sigma, which focuses on variation and design, are viewed as complimentary disciplines aimed at fostering “business and operational excellence” by the Lean Six Sigma approach.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) produced the first standard outlining a Six Sigma process, “ISO 13053:2011,” in 2011. Other standards have largely been developed by colleges or businesses with Six Sigma first-party certification processes.
