Dr. Chuck Radis approaches medicine from an unconventional perspective. After finishing his internal medicine residency at Brighton Medical Center in 1985, he relocated his family to Peaks Island, where he ran the Island Health Center. In addition to his clinic duties on Peaks and Chebeague Islands, he made house calls on Cliff and Long Island all year. Dr. Radis eventually left his Peaks Island medical practice to pursue fellowship study in rheumatology and clinical immunology, but he still commutes to the mainland on his boat year-round. His daughters, Kate and Molly, graduated from Peaks Island Elementary School, which had 40 pupils and was one of the smallest in Maine. He has also worked on public health programs in South Sudan and Uganda in recent years. The Maine-African-Partnership for Social Justice, which he co-founded with his wife, Sandi, and son-in-law, Dan Crothers, collaborates with community groups in the Kiryandongo United Nations Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Traditional birth attendant training, first-aid training, cleanliness and immunization initiatives have all been part of educational efforts.
Dr. Radis has no financial interest/arrangement or association that might be interpreted as a real or apparent conflict of interest in the context of this presentation.
