I enjoyed how the authors portrayed the many geographical, cultural, and historical landscapes in which Maeda lived, as well as the close-up views of other characters and the settings in which major events occurred. The book brought the drama and tragedy of the epidemic into close-up view by depicting what it did to Maeda and his family. I learned intriguing or shocking facts, such as the influence that burning dung in Kansas had on the onset and spread of Spanish flu around the world. I’m pleased by the authors’ extensive study to authenticate the narrative and characters; they’ve conjured the unique world of professional boxing. Author E.M. Nathenson
Thank you for sending me a copy of The Toughest Man Who Ever Lived. It was a lot of fun for me. You’ve drawn such a vivid image of Master Maeda that it makes me wish I’d met him. He reminds me a lot of Frank Gotch. They both perished as a result of renal issues! You were really kind to both Gotch and Jack Johnson, in my opinion. In a mixed battle, I believe both Gotch and Maeda would have easily beaten Johnson, and a Gotch-Maeda showdown would have been the finest bout in history. I’m glad you didn’t read too much into Gotch’s refusal to meet with Maeda in Havana. After all, he was on his honeymoon and in no mood to quarrel, as you pointed out. He also had no idea who Maeda was. Author Mike Chapman
I discovered what a legend Maeda was after reading The Toughest Man Who Ever Lived. He was the genuine forefather of today’s MMA, and both Bunasawa and Murray did an excellent job of setting the tone. As a judoka for the past 30 years, I look forward to seeing Maeda’s name discussed in the same breath as Bruce Lee’s. —Sam Mitani, International Editor of Road & Track Magazine The paperback edition is referred to in this paragraph.
