Sid Miller is the 12th Commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA)
Sid Miller, an eighth-generation farmer and rancher, is the 12th Commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). He has spent his whole life advocating for Texas agriculture, rural areas, and the wonderful state of Texas.
Sid Miller, who was born in De Leon, Comanche County, in September 1955, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Ag Education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville.
Miller, a well-known community activist, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2000. He soon established himself as an ardent supporter of Texas agriculture, constitutional rights, and individual liberty for all Texans.
In 2014, he was elected statewide as the 12th Texas Agriculture Commissioner, and in 2018, he was re-elected to a second term.
Commissioner Miller has introduced substantial, common sense reform to TDA since entering office as Agriculture Commissioner. He cleared a two-and-a-half year backlog in organic certificates in his first six months in office. He restructured field operations in order to increase efficiency for Texas taxpayers. This includes boosting the frequency of consumer protection inspections by up to 183% while reducing TDA inspectors’ annual mileage by more than half a million kilometers.
In addition, Commissioner Miller initiated Operation Maverick, a consumer protection campaign aimed at locating firms who failed to register their commercial scales with TDA. Registrations have grown by 35%, and TDA currently monitors over 2,000 previously unregistered firms to ensure consumer protection.
Commissioner Miller, a former agriculture teacher and school board member, is dedicated to combating childhood obesity and supporting healthy lifestyles for Texas students. His Farm Fresh Fridays and other farm-to-school efforts resulted in a $14 million boost in school purchases of Texas goods. Commissioner Miller is also committed to ensuring that rural communities have access to the water and infrastructure they require to prosper. To that aim, he established the TDA’s Office of Water to guarantee that all Texans have access to safe drinking water for current and future generations. Furthermore, during his leadership, TDA has funneled hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds to local communities for infrastructure renovations and repairs under the Texas Community Development Block Grant program.
Commissioner Miller is the state’s primary champion for Texas agriculture, Texas-grown goods, and Texas-owned companies across the world. He is in charge of TDA’s world-famous GO TEXAN initiative, which promotes the greatest goods, businesses, and communities in the Lone Star State. Since entering office, Commissioner Miller has led trade trips to Cuba, Ecuador, Argentina, Israel, China, and every continent except Antarctica in order to expand market exposure for Texas agriculture. Commissioner Miller is an American Quarter Horse breeder and trainer. He is a well-known rodeo cowboy with 12 world championship titles in his leisure time.
He and his wife, Debra, have been married for over four decades. They are the parents of two sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandkids. They are active members of Erath County’s Cowboy Church, where Commissioner Miller also serves as an elder.

Medical Cannabis Scholar, Advocate, and Entrepreneur Viridiana Edwards
Viridiana was born and reared in El Paso, Texas. She enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 and was sent to South Carolina for basic training. She was ordered to deploy to Kandahar, Afghanistan, a few years later, in 2009. Viridiana was medically retired from the United States Army in June 2015 after ten years of service due to injuries incurred while fighting in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010.
Viridiana sought care from the Department of Veterans Affairs for her injuries. Unfortunately, she was administered pharmaceutical drugs that harmed her rather than helped her. Her research led her to discover other veterans who were being damaged by therapy. As a result, she conducted a national research to determine why U.S. veterans choose to treat their ailments with cannabis rather than or in addition to prescription treatment. Her thesis project, “The Battle Off the Battlefield: Exploring Medical Cannabis Use Among US Veterans Seeking Relief,” was published in 2019 as part of her M.A. in Sociology at The University of Texas at El Paso. Viridiana was admitted into the inaugural class of the nation’s first Master of Science in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the same year. She plans to graduate in May of 2021.
Given Texas’ cannabis prohibitions, Edwards was intrigued by the fact that more than 70% of her thesis research replies were from Texas veterans. On August 17, 2020, Edwards created and released a Texas-wide research on medical cannabis usage with the Foundation for an Informed Texas, which got over 3,000 answers from veterans, civilians, and persons who left Texas for another state with a less restricted medicinal cannabis program. This information will be shared with Texas lawmakers in preparation for the 2021 Texas 87th Legislative Session in support of measures demanding an expansion of the Texas Compassionate Use Program. As a result of her research, Edwards was approached by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy to become a non-resident scholar for Drug Policy.
CannaVi Hemp, a CBD Hemp product brand with specifically developed products, was launched in November 2019. Viridiana is also a member of the Foundation for an Informed Texas, Texas NORML, and Veterans Action Council.
