Bertram R. Forer, a well-known psychologist, had invited 39 college students to complete a personality test. Then, ignoring their exam answers, he gave each student the identical assessment, which included the following statements:
You have a strong desire for others to like and admire you, yet you are often critical of yourself.
While you have certain personality flaws, you can typically compensate for them.
You have a significant amount of unused capacity that you have not utilized.
On the exterior, you are disciplined and self-controlled, but on the inside, you are anxious and uneasy.
You may have severe questions about whether you made the correct decision or did the right thing at times.
You enjoy a certain level of diversity and variation and feel unsatisfied when restricted and limited.
You also take pleasure in being an independent thinker, and you do not accept other people’s assertions without solid proof.
You are gregarious, friendly, and social at times, yet introverted, distrustful, and reserved at others.
Some of your goals seem a little unrealistic.
Forer then asked each student to score the correctness of the aforementioned evaluation on a scale of 0 (“very incorrect”) to 5 (“very accurate”). The class average was a mind-boggling 4.26.
In summary, the kids believed he could properly read their personalities (despite the fact that every one of them had received the same evaluation).
