Mr. Perry Thompson Ninjutsu and Feldenkrais Interview According to the interview: (PT) The Feldenkrais method is an essential component of your training. How did you get interested with it? (DN) I was a Feldenkrais student. In the last 10 years of his life, I learnt a lot from him. He came from the martial arts as well, and we met in 1969 when he visited Japan. I came to him since I was frequently wounded while living in Japan. After a few years, the injuries began to concern me, and my entire body was in pain. I was exposed to the method and came to know Dr. Feldenkrais since I knew several of his pupils. First and foremost, I had to heal myself. I discovered a technique to move that does not require pain. Even if I have injuries, I can learn to move in such a manner that they no longer affect me. When the body operates in a really integrated manner, even injuries do not disturb you. And even if they irritate you, you have a strategy for dealing with them. It has less to do with attempting to treat a hurting location and more to do with the quality of your movement and how you perform what you do. It is a genuine examination of the status of the body-mind interaction. (PT) Could you tell me more about Feldenkrais and its connection to martial arts? (DN) It is quite easy. It is made up of two parts: Awareness via movement, which are group sessions that are typically done lying on the floor with extremely delicate motions, in which we learn to pay attention to our actions and movements and help develop them. Many of the motions are derived from the child’s early development phase, while many are derived from martial arts. There are thousands of different classes to choose from.
