Problem: Providing healthcare during a pandemic with an ever-changing landscape is a challenge.

Background: The impact of a pandemic on direct care can be catastrophic. Pandemics often disproportionately affect people in certain age ranges leading to indirect impacts on health such as change in economy and an alteration in resources. It can impact the availability of healthcare providers, due to death, illness, or fear.

Methods: This exploratory study used an anonymous online survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare providers in Idaho.

Results: Of the 139 completed surveys, most were completed by nurse practitioners (67.6%). Nearly half (48.9%) practicing in primary care and 40% work in communities of less than 50,000 residents. Most (49%) participants rated the impact of COVID “extreme.” The specific areas of impact, (i.e., patient volumes visit format, personal lifestyle changes, etc.) will be described in this presentation.

Conclusion: Healthcare providers in Idaho perceive the impact of COVID on their practice to be extreme. Three and six-month follow up surveys are planned.

Michelle Anderson, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP

Michelle Anderson is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Idaho State University in the School of Nursing Graduate program. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner for the past 19 years, having practiced in rural and urban settings. She has owned and operated her own NP clinic in rural Idaho for the last 12 years prior to transitioning to education.

Dr. Anderson has received professional awards for her service through recognition in her community as a top healthcare provider, state recognition with a preceptor of the year award, and national recognition through AANP for Clinical Excellence in 2013 and Advocacy in 2018. She was awarded Fellowship through AANP in 2019. Dr. Anderson resides in Meridian, Idaho and enjoys spending time with her family and staying active in the community.

Susan Tavernier, PhD, APRN-CNS, AOCN

Susan Tavernier is an Associate Professor and the Director for Graduate Studies at Idaho State University School of Nursing. She is a Clinical Nurse Specialist with over 30 years’ experience in adult oncology. Her funded research is varied; quality of life, interprofessional education in palliative care, patient-provider communication, distress management, psychometric analyses and biologic biomarkers.

Dr. Tavernier received awards for outstanding mentorship, achievement in research and publication. She is actively involved in the Oncology Nurses of Southern Idaho Chapter of ONS and area hospital nursing research and evidence-based practice projects.
