It has been a one-of-a-kind time line that depicts the very severe developments in our profession in a relatively short period of time. This session will go through some of the changes from the front lines. The talk will start with classic chemotherapy (outcomes and side effects), then go on to targeted treatment and, more recently, immunotherapy. The presentation will also outline where future therapy should go as well as the significant obstacles it will most likely confront (scientific, social, financial, and political, etc)

To highlight the advancements (and setbacks) that have resulted in overall change in cancer care.
Examine the science associated with such developments and how it arose.
Dr. Balaban is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (1977). His internship year would be spent at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital and Bi-County Community Hospital. Following that year, Dr. Balaban completed an Internal Medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital in his hometown. He began his career in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Texas Southwester in Dallas, Texas, where he received fellowship training. He remained on the UT Southwestern faculty until 1994. Dr. Balaban then moved to Pennsylvania, first as an independent practitioner and then as part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center network. He is the Medical Director of a community oncology practice in State College, PA, and a Professor of Medicine at both the Penn State Cancer Institute and the Penn State College of Medicine.
Dr. Balaban is heavily active in Medical Oncology, sitting on a number of boards and committees within the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
He has written significantly in the oncologic literature, including a number of frequently cited treatment guidelines relevant to Medical Oncology practice. He is also a member of the Journal of Oncology Practice’s editorial board. Dr. Balaban is passionate in health policy problems affecting hematology/oncology and the medical community as a whole. He presently serves on the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Board of Trustees and represents Medical Oncology in the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates. He is a regular visitor/advocate on Capitol Hill for continuing federal concerns as well as state-related medical practice issues that may be influenced by Harrisburg, PA state legislation.
