DescriptionYour Speaker’s Remarks
I recall seeing client after client as a psychotherapist at a non-profit HMO. They were uneasy, prone to panic attacks, or just unable to cope with stress. They had attempted to see doctors with little luck. I was useless. I became lost in a loop of treating symptoms and focusing on what was wrong instead of addressing them as individuals and reinforcing what was well.
I came into a meditation session with the most fantastic, vibrant, and confident teacher, desperate to discover something better for myself and my clients. After only one session, I felt more energized, more able to handle, and more attentive to my clients.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, was this loving and great educator (MBSR).
That was 30 years ago, and with the guidance of Jon Kabat-Zinn, I have been able to improve my life and practice by applying the ideas I found in that yoga session in Worcester, Massachusetts. I started my own business, became an instructor alongside Jon, and began to witness fantastic therapeutic successes with my clients. I was feeling energized and assured of myself and my clinical job.
Then I was diagnosed with cancer in 1995. I put Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction to the test, learning firsthand how to deal with the agony and stress of chemotherapy and everything else that comes with a stem cell transplant.
My personal and professional experience with this evidence-based approach inspired me to create mindfulness-based therapies for bone marrow transplants at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Emory University, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction transformed my life and the lives of many of my clients. I’d like to share these techniques with you.
