Polyvagal theory has several applications in the realm of safety. While safety is essential for healing, it may be difficult to obtain in healthcare, for both patients and practitioners. The presenters are seasoned doctors who work in acute care and outpatient settings and will illustrate how to apply Polyvagal Theory ideas in everyday practice.
Marilyn Sanders, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician and neonatologist who works at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Newborn Intensive Care Unit in Hartford, CT, where she caters for critically sick newborns, infants, and their families. Dr. Sanders completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She is a Pediatrics Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She also offers neurodevelopmental follow-up for neonates and infants up to the age of three. She has written articles and book chapters on trauma-informed treatment in the hospital environment for young newborns, children, and their families. Dr. Sanders and her co-author, Dr. George Thompson, have a book deal with WW Norton & Company. Their book, The Polyvagal Theory and the Developing Child: Strengthening Children, Families, and Communities, will be released in July 2021 and addresses the Polyvagal Theory’s implications for the well-being and development of newborns, children, and adolescents.
