Knowing the movements of the face is one of the most difficult aspects of understanding the human body.
Splitting facial motion into essential forms that may be used together to make emotions not only simplifies the face but also allows you to re-create these shapes in CG and animation complicated expressions. Derrick Sesson, a Facial Modeler at Digital Domain, will teach you the fundamentals of Facial Blendshape Modeling in this 5-hour session.
This class assumes you know nothing about blendshapes and walks you through the whole face process in Autodesk Maya. Derrick begins by explaining FACS (Facial Action Coding System) thoroughly before building a ZBrush head for deformation, breaking down basic forms needed for each part of the face, then blocking in those shapes with deformers such as clusters. He demonstrates how to tweak the forms using Maya’s sculpting tools before combining them all in a blendshape node.
The ideas and lessons in this course will provide you with a foundational grasp of FACS and how to make blendshapes, as well as all the abilities you need to develop a collection of facial blendshapes that allow you to morph a face into whatever expression you choose.
The free head model seen throughout the class was made by the great team at 3dscanstore.com. The techniques provided may be used to other character head models as well.
