Why is JavaScript used?

JavaScript (JS) is a first-class programming language that is lightweight, interpreted, or JIT compiled. Although it is best known as a scripting language for Web pages, it is also used in many non-browser environments, including Node.js and Apache CouchDB. JS is a multi-paradigm, prototype-based dynamic scripting language that supports object-oriented, imperative, and declarative (e.g. functional programming) styles.

ECMAScript is the JavaScript standard. All modern browsers support ECMAScript 5.1 as of 2012. Older browsers must support ECMAScript 3. ECMA International released the sixth major version of ECMAScript, ECMAScript 2015, on June 17, 2015. Since then, ECMAScript standards have been released on a yearly basis.
