What You’ll Learn in These 7 Weeks
The course meets on Wednesdays at Noon Pacific.
Jean will take you through the male archetypal forces, insights, and patterns you’ll need to find and embrace in order to properly embody these transforming energies and elements of knowledge that are associated with both men and women in this 7-week transformational journey.
Each weekly LIVE contemplation and exploration session will build on the previous one, giving you a comprehensive, holistic grasp of the insights you’ll need to discover and enliven the gods in you, deepening your soul’s journey and capacity to reach your full potential.
Module 1: Completing Your Soul’s Journey The Integration of God Archetypes (February 14)
Certain archetypes may be embraced in guys but inhibited in girls from infancy onward, and vice versa. Consciousness-raising alters “who” we may become as a range of human potential — by activating specific archetypes inside us.
According to Jung’s psychology, everyone possesses both masculine and feminine characteristics. However, according to his concept, which was consistent with his time, the male element in women, known as the “animus,” and the feminine element in men, known as the “anima,” were lesser masculine or feminine attitudes or qualities – less aware.
A woman can be “animus-possessed,” while a man can be “anima-possessed.” Wherever stereotyped roles are the only acceptable way to be a woman or a man, the contrasexual components are less developed and less aware, and are frequently inappropriate and hence suppressed.
When our exterior roles represent our inner archetypes, there is depth and joy in what we do; but, when expressing and developing masculine archetypes that may be sources of meaning are suppressed as “unfeminine,” we are unable to reach our full potential.
When archetypes cannot be lived out, we are more prone to be drawn to persons who are the outward representations of the inner masculine god-archetypes. We are maturing into who we can be during adolescence, which is responsible for “hero worship” and “crushes,” which lose their allure as we develop them in ourselves. We project what is unconscious yet near to the surface in us onto others at various phases of our life, albeit more subtly.
Women and men may develop and incorporate masculine and female archetypal traits into their personalities more than at any other point in history. Shifts in our psyches occur at various times of life as we are pulled toward wholeness, psychological, and spiritual growth.
Hestia might be found in the temples of all the gods and goddesses. She was the sacred fire that lit up and warmed the place. The gods personify the beneficial attributes of the archetypes that link to the Self in their temples. Each also have shadow characteristics.
This session will teach you:
An overview of the gods and their elements, which you may absorb into your heart, mind, soul, and body rather than projecting them onto others.
How the gods of the mental world, Zeus, Apollo, and Hermes, can thrive in you
Ares and Poseidon are two major archetypes of embodied or expressive emotions.
Dionysus’ euphoric or mystical experience
The introverted environment of Hades as a source of introspection, imagination, and reconnecting with cut off elements of oneself
Module 2: Patriarchy Mythology and Embracing Zeus’ Positive Attributes (February 21)
The sky world is comprised of spirit and thought. You have Zeus attributes if you are resolute, can readily see the broad picture, know what you want and have the courage to go after it, and recover quickly from defeat.
Zeus was the most powerful and strong of the gods. From Mt. Olympus, he enforced his will and exerted authority, punishing with lightning. His powers within you might bring light or darkness, suffocating lifeforce or encouraging you to be a light provider.
You may identify Zeus in your father or employer – as someone in authority or a generous giver. Zeus’ willful head may also rear its head within you, forcing you to stray too far from the feminine by being overly logical or dominating, or “living in your mind” and rejecting your emotions.
The thunderbolt and the eagle are Zeus’ insignia. He is the patriarchal culture’s dominating figure, as well as the dynastic father and today’s CEOs, kings, and alpha men.
This session will teach you:
The tale of Zeus and his ascension to dominance, which included undermining goddesses and undervaluing women. (Does this archetype exist within you, keeping you small?)
An summary of Zeus’ good attributes of decisiveness, determination, and ambition, as well as how to discover and utilize them in yourself.
What it means to be attracted to or involved with a “Zeus guy”
How to negotiate Zeus’ problematic attributes in others while uncovering the empowering features of this deity inside yourself.
How developing and combining the Zeus archetype’s determined intellect and entrepreneurial energy may help you achieve your goals and be successful in the world.
Module 3: Poseidon, God of the Sea, and Hades, God of the Underworld — Archetypes in Their Own Right and Undeveloped, Undervalued Aspects of Zeus (February 28)
The sky realm is cerebral, mental, hierarchical (superior/inferior), judgemental, and the exercise of will via power in terms of psychological worlds. As God of the Sea, Poseidon oversaw the psychic domain of emotions and impulses, which he exhibited with spontaneity and immediacy; he might explode in fury or jealousy, maintain a grudge, and be spiteful.
Moods are analogous to oceans, which can be stormy or calm and tranquil. When alcohol is added to the moods suggested by this archetype, they become more intense and out of control.
The underworld was Hades’ domain, which is the introverted, inner world of memory and the unconscious realm of pictures. This is the domain of the personal and communal unconscious, dreams, spontaneous visions, fantasy, reverie, and archetypal links.
We are born with predispositions — our psychological typology: extroversion or introversion, thinking or feeling, intuition or experience — that correspond to particular god-archetypes. What is discounted by those whose judgements carry weight has the impact of discounting or not-developing traits in children’s and adults’ psyches.
They may be purposefully suppressed by shame and embarrassment, such as “Boys don’t weep,” which isolates males from their feelings and emotional reactions. Women who are natural leaders may have been warned that they are “bossy” and that “nobody would like you,” with the message being “don’t be yourself.”
This session will teach you:
The mental sphere is elevated by patriarchy and alpha-male judgements.
How Poseidon’s emotional domain is discounted as feminine and repressed in boys (makes wholeness more achievable in females)
Women are expected to be outgoing, even if this is not their personality type.
How Hades’ invisibility — the inner realm, introversion, creativity, and reflection — necessitates the preservation of isolation
Which of these realms do you normally occupy, and what is your typology?
Module 4: The Generation of Apollo’s and Hermes’ Sons (Whom the Patriarchy Reward) (March 7)
Second-generation Olympian gods include Apollo, Hermes, Ares, Hephaestus, and Dionysus. These archetypes may form and define males or the masculine elements of women, or they might be the “types” that women are drawn to or idealize. These are archetypes that do or do not do well in patriarchy.
Apollo and Hermes are both at home in Zeus’ mental realm, and where competition and capitalism value acquisitions, recognition, and prestige — in schools where grades and accomplishments matter, and admission to prestigious colleges matter — these are the usual active archetypes in both women and men who are on the path to success.
Apollo was the Sun God, the Lawgiver, and the Archer with the Golden Bow and Arrows. He, who dragged the sun’s chariot through the sky, can be relied on to arrive on time. He was an emotionally detached god and archetypal in the sky world. He was the Greeks’ favorite son, the “fair-headed” deity. His twin sister was Artemis, his father Zeus, his mother Leto, and he was a Titan.
Hermes was the Messenger God, and he could freely travel everywhere, even Mt. Olympus and the Underworld. He was the communicator, also known as the affable deity, a traveler, a prankster, and a soul guide. He was Zeus’s son with Maia, a minor goddess.
You will learn:
Two archetypes that assist both men and women advance in life
Poseidon and Hermes are connected with emotional detachment and mental activity, respectively.
These two archetypes’ gifts include the capacity to communicate through words, which may be quite valuable in negotiations and trade.
That Poseidon and Hermes had no wife or consort; if these archetypes are prominent in a woman or man, marriage and relationships are less important in their life.
Module 5: Ares and Hephaestus, Zeus and Hera’s Rejected Sons (March 14) (Pre-recorded)
Zeus’ rejected sons did not utilize their minds or words. They both used physical action to express themselves. Both were physical and manual, as opposed to mental. Both were driven by emotions and expressed them either directly (Ares) or indirectly through what he produced with his hands (Hephaestus). Both of their parents rejected them.
Ares, the God of War, represented aggressiveness as well as the dancer and lover. Because he was illogical, he was the least regarded and venerated of the 12 Olympians by the Greeks. In sharp contrast, known as Mars by the Romans, he was held in great respect.
Ares appears as an archetype in passionate, strong emotions. An outburst of emotion is likely to prompt an instant bodily response. Ares predisposes both men and women to be in touch with their bodies’ sensations, which often leads to lovemaking or aggressive brawling.
Hephaestus, God of the Forge, archetype of the Craftsman or Craftswoman, Inventor, Loner personifies a deep human need to produce things, to create practical and beautiful products. Hephaestus was rejected and cast from Mt. Olympus because he lacked power and appearance in the sky world. Instead, he toiled alone at his underground forge.
In patriarchy, his traits are as devalued as physical labor; he is introverted in an extroverted culture, communicates by what he creates rather than words. He was the God with the fewest traits and the greatest unhappiness.
Hephaestus, with his club foot, represents the injured writer, artist, or artisan. The Romans referred to him as Vulcan. His forge’s fire was volcanic fire.
Hephaestus typically does not appear in the lives of modern women until the second half or final third of their lives, when they attend an art class and find this hidden part of themselves.
This module will teach you:
The wounded artist-writer-inventor-craftsperson whose creativity originates from volcanic fire metaphors (anger and passion).
Beauty and expressiveness that would otherwise stay buried inside are unleashed via creative effort that provides these hidden characteristics concrete expression.
Hephaestus and Aphrodite’s union: the “wedding” of beauty and workmanship
The union of Hephaestus and Athena, which allows creative work to be appreciated in the world, might reflect an inner marriage of these two traits or, in the case of certain artists, a spouse who is a business manager.
Module 6: The Divine Dionysus as Lover, Wanderer, and Shaman (March 21) (Pre-recorded)
Dionysus is the paradigm for the wildness inside us that extends to all of nature, representing the complete range of human emotions – from agony to pleasure. He causes tension inside our psyches and cultures by embodying both life and death, the ethereal and the earthy.
Worshippers of Dionysus were mostly women who rejoiced and communed with him in orgia (orgy), a trance-like state created by frantic music and intoxicants. The drug-induced ecstasy associated with the 1960s free love movement in America was a Dionysian movement.
This male image, however, is much more, calling you into relationship with the Divine… expanding your awareness of Oneness
Dionysus also signifies excitement and emotion, in contrast to Apollo, who represents form and scientific reason. This conflict of opposites might help you achieve a healthy balance of masculine and feminine energies within your mind.
You will learn:
How Dionysus may help you comprehend and experience Oneness
How Dionysus’ rescue of his mortal mother from Hades, making her immortal, may feed your own story.
How Dionysus might assist in the evolution of the patriarchal Zeus into a loving, caring cultural archetype
Dionysus as a spiritual guide for communication with others and with the Divine
Insights into Dionysus’s dark aspects, as well as the role of strife and lunacy in his mythology
Dionysus’ forces in human psyche, family, and patriarchy undermine (and balance) Apollonian ideals.
Dionysus’ traits that link you to your own wildness, nature, and the Divine Feminine
How to release the creative potential that emerges from the conflict of opposites between Apollo (lawmaker) and Dionysus (ecstatic reveler)
The Gods and Goddesses in Us Module 7: Wholeness and Authenticity (March 28)
This session summarizes how the Olympian gods and goddesses are potentials in all of us, and how a centered woman or man with consciousness and choice may detect, embody, act, and grow through them.
We shall be guided by mythic insights. Procrustes and his famed bed, for example, demonstrate what it means to be “dis-membered,” or cut off from aspects of ourselves that were not embraced.
And the deity dreaded by Zeus to emerge from Metis is feminine knowledge and love. Our personal and societal progress is hampered by the notion of preferring love above power.
This module will teach you:
Compassionate understanding has the ability to heal.
The importance of thankfulness in developing trust
The significance of the “all-loving heart of God” inside us
The union of feminine insight and loving power
The yin-yang picture, the circle with a holy center, and the vesica piscis all have symbolic meanings.
That we are all on a soul journey: what have we come to love? What did we discover? What are we doing here right now? These are questions that only we can answer…
