DescriptionOur clients come to us to feel better. But to be human is to experience suffering, especially when it refers to what is important to us (we don’t worry about Netflix going out of business; we worry about our loved ones, professions, or the environment). Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages people to live better lives even when they aren’t feeling well. ACT develops psychological flexibility via six key processes, allowing clients to let go of the struggle against suffering, stop being bullied by their inner critics, impostor voices, and ‘I’m not good enough’ tales, and progress toward a life worth living—one marked by meaning, purpose, and vitality. As data supporting its usefulness for a variety of clinical presentations has accumulated, ACT has grown in popularity (e.g., anxiety, depression, tinnitus, chronic pain, interpersonal issues, psychosis and more). Its emphasis on values, as well as its use of metaphors and experiential exercises, bring ACT to life in noticeable and profound ways.
