Motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as slowness of movement, stiffness, and tremor, have long been the focus of diagnosis, assessment, and therapy with rehabilitation as well as drugs and surgery.

However, some of the first symptoms to appear—non-motor issues—have an influence on speech, language, and cognition and are sometimes neglected until these symptoms become more acute and evident. Furthermore, many of these problems are unresponsive to pharmacological or surgical treatment. This is when speech-language pathology treatment comes into play.

Since 2007, John Dean, MA, CCC-SLP, has specialized in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and associated illnesses. Aside from clinical work, he has been involved in a variety of Parkinson’s-related projects, including the development of interdisciplinary Parkinson’s rehab networks for a large healthcare company, the founding of startups that build technologies for people living with Parkinson’s, and even a stint as a member of the Davis Phinney Foundation’s senior leadership.

He currently resides in Lisbon, where he is working with Josefa Domingos to produce workout activities that mix movement, speech, and cognition, as well as developing a firm that develops technology to aid in the scaling up of dual-task training for patients all over the world.
