DescriptionChildhood abuse may have a dramatic impact on human development, culminating in a wide range of mental, emotional, and social issues, including addiction illnesses. Attachment theory can help us understand how early relationship experiences might have long-term consequences. Developmental trauma and attachment disruptions might result in nervous system regulatory impairments. Addictive behaviors might be viewed as a short-term effort at control with long-term effects.
This talk will look at the scientific connections between trauma, attachment, and addiction, as well as how to assist clients regain the ability to self-regulate in healthy ways.

Jon G. Caldwell, DO, PhD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of individuals who have suffered from relationship trauma and who engage in addictive behaviors. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Meadows Behavioral Healthcare right now. His therapeutic method was greatly impacted by his PhD studies at the University of California, Davis, where he began researching how early childhood abuse and insecure attachment connections impair cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. His treatment approach is still influenced by contemplative psychology as well as the practices of mindfulness and self-compassion. Dr. Caldwell has authored several studies on child abuse, attachment theory, emotion regulation, and mindfulness, and he is a well-known international speaker and trainer on these and other subjects.
