Have you tried humble pie? It’s difficult to swallow, yet it’s really beneficial to your health. Kettlebell Lightning, led by Lauren Brooks and Alex Verdugo, is a powerful action-packed training DVD that incorporates a variety of motions and equipment. If necessary, it can also serve as humble pie.
When I set out to attempt this DVD for the first time, I got a good dose of “humble pie.”
“How difficult could it be?” I reasoned. So I grabbed a 24kg kettlebell and began Kettlebell Lighting, which is a selection on the main menu that offers an eclectic play list of timed training intervals. The workout quickly put me in my place.
Each round comprised a fresh set of motions to perform for one minute. Most rounds began with a kettlebell exercise or two, followed by a complimentary callisthenic movement for the next minute. For example, in Kettlebell Lightning, the first round began with one-armed swings then switched at the 30-second mark. The second minute of work consisted of squat thrusts, sometimes known as burpees.
The screen allows you to relax between rounds as a rest period clock ticks away. The rest period includes a summary of the motions in the following round, as well as fitness recommendations and interesting information.
Because Lauren and Alex are both on the screen as you practice, they give an unusual accountability component.
Moving through the exercises “with” them in real time puts speed and effort throughout work intervals into context. Also, because there are two coaches, they may move along with you while demonstrating two alternative scale possibilities, which is particularly beneficial for people who require changes.
This isn’t simply a primer on kettlebell training. Kettlebell Lightning contains movement coaching, follow-along routines, body weight exercises, and a bonus Indian club workout. The DVD has over 30 motions with scaling choices for both beginners and intermediate athletes. The actual value, in my opinion, are the pre-programmed routines that you may undertake with the teachers. All of your knowledge and expertise in kettlebell training will not always result in a training program. Kettlebell Lightning does this through context and structure.
After finishing KettleBell Lightning with my good shirt soaked in sweat and my ego broken, I can only admire the product that On the Edge Fitness has created.
Kettlebell Lighting will keep you occupied and won’t grow old with just one kettlebell and some floor space.
